JHPP ALARM SYSTEM UPGRADE
CASE STUDY
(FEBRUARY – APRIL 2023)
MEET THE CLIENT
Mainstream is the largest provider of hydroelectric power in West Africa with operations in Kainji, Jebba and Zungeru Hydropower plants. The Jebba Hydropower plant with an installed capacity of 400MW was built by the federal government of Nigeria in 1985 and licensed to Mainstream Energy as an operator.

PROJECT SCOPE
As part of their planned improvement projects, the SCADA team together with Zip Automations designed a full SCADA based control system to replace the obsolete alarm control system which was previously a relay-based control system.
PROJECT EXECUTION
The signals for each generator were wired to remote I/O modules to allow for modularity and selective decommissioning and recommissioning of the system.
The Remote IO systems were networked through PROFINET a central S7 1500 PLC through PROFINET and linked to Multiple Operator Workstations with the WinCC Professional SCADA system.

The new system provides greater visibility into the process as well as the categorization of the alarming signals based on the section of the generation unit.
The signals are also logged to a database to allow operators to review past alarms for incidence response and resolution.
